When we get a lot of Retreat requests from a particular area of the world, we start to look for families who are willing to open up their home for use as a Retreat location.
We love to hold our Retreats in lovely large homes for two main reasons: 1) Homes feel much more personal and comfortable than conference centers and have the right ambiance for a Retreat where we’ll be talking about home and family; and 2) Donated space and access to a kitchen where we can prep some of the food allows us to make our Retreats much more affordable for the attendees.
If you or someone you know might be interested in hosting a Power of Moms Retreat, read on for photos and details of what we’ve found works well in a Retreat location. Please contact [email protected] with questions and/or desire to host a Retreat.
We take care of any necessary chair rental, handle all food and are very respectful of the home of each hostess, cleaning and leaving as good as new (moms are a pretty clean group when they don’t have their children with them!). We offer five free Retreat registrations to each hostess (each registration is worth about $130) plus free Power of Moms programs for her family members. For those hostesses who enjoy speaking, we love inviting them to participate on panels and share their experiences during the Retreat.
What are Power of Moms Retreats?
Since June of 2010, The Power of Moms has held 16 Retreats around the world. This page on our website describes the Retreats in greater detail, but our main goal is to gather mothers to a beautiful location and give them an opportunity to strengthen each other, participate in meaningful discussions, and return home armed with ideas and inspiration to help them build great families and be the mother they want to be.
A Day Retreat typically lasts from 9 am to 5 pm on a Saturday, and it includes conference-style presentations (with lots of audience participation), a lovely lunch with powerful discussion groups, and several break-out sessions for small group conversations.
We focus on topics such as taking care of the person inside the mom, establishing family systems, moving good ideas forward, and keeping a healthy perspective on motherhood. Each Retreat has been incredible. Not because we think we’re incredible, but because the mothers who attend are deliberate, sharp, wonderful women who want to create strong families. Simply being in a room with so many good women who simply want to grow and learn from each other is powerful.
What types of homes are needed for Retreats?
- Size: We typically have 50-80 moms attend our Retreats. This means we need homes that have a large area where we can rearrange furniture and bring in chairs to seat 50-70 people (We especially love homes that have quite a few chairs on hand!)
- Location: To create a “retreat” feel, we love holding Retreats in homes that are a bit off the beaten track. But we’ve found that homes that are within an hour from a major airport and that aren’t too far from major freeways work well.
- Ideal amenities: Convenient parking, space for lunch discussion groups to be held outside, at least two restrooms accessible to attendees, a kitchen where we can prep some food (we typically bring in trays of gourmet sandwiches and have our staff prep simple salads and snacks in the kitchen of the hostess) and an area where we can set up lunch and snacks buffet-style. We don’t need tables as just draw chairs into circles inside and outside (if outside space is available) so moms can have discussions while eating their lunch on their laps (we do lap-friendly foods).
- Date and Time: We can work around dates that work for our hostesses. Retreats typically go from 9am-5pm on a Saturday. We sometimes offer a Friday session as well during the afternoon and we occasionally offer a dinner and games to allow moms some relaxing social time on Friday evening.
- What will The Power of Moms provide? Chair rental (if needed), all food that will be served at the event, cleaning costs after the Retreat, plus all the set-up, logistics, etc. Basically, if a homeowner is kind enough to co-sponsor this Retreat, we will take care of all the details and do our best to create as little disruption as possible.
