Sometimes it can be SO HARD to get our kids out in nature. We know it’s good for them to spend more time outside. We’ve heard that some of the best family bonding happens when we’re hiking or walking or playing outside together. But there sure is a lot of whining when we suggest that we head out on a walk or hike! Once the kids accept that this hike or walk is really going to happen and we actually get out there (which can take quite some time given all the shoes and socks that need to be found, the snacks and water we need to pack up, etc.), the kids usually enjoy it. They find cool rocks and interesting bugs and they see that it’s actually not that bad to breathe that fresh air and be away from their climate-controlled and screen-oriented every-day life.
This wonderful 7-minute film was submitted by one of our members, Christina Franklin. It offers a very real and beautiful look at how we really can unplug our kids from electronics and get them into nature – even if they aren’t thrilled about the idea initially. The film has been in several film festivals and is currently touring with the Wild and Scenic Film Festival. Thank you for making and sharing this film, Christina!

Love this! Thank you for reminding me as a grandmother, to teach my grandchildren this valuable lesson. Because everyone else is too busy?

The best: “It was mostly just ignoring a lot of whining.” I felt so understood! It’s nice to know my kids aren’t the only ones who don’t feel joyful every step of the trail. Also, a wonderful reminder to let them help determine the agenda through exploration. I usually want to “get it done” in my way.
